The Four Main Stages of a Bear Market

  • The Distribution Phase - This often takes place during the beginning of a correction cycle. Investors ignore all signs that the market is turning around. They are eager to buy the dip in their favorite stocks because they believe the market is set to turn back up.

  • The Confirmation Phase - Investors are entertaining the fact that the markets may actually be in the process of a correction.

  • The Despair Phase - People recognize that the markets are weak. And at this point, investors begin selling stocks, and all sectors begin experiencing fear-driven declines.

The Capitulation Phase - In this final stage, bullish investors are still convinced the market will rebound and return to its old highs. This phase is characterized by intense selling pressure and high trading value.
